We don't drink masala chai everyday but when we do, we do it the right way. This recipe is what my mom and grandma make and drink every single day. It is fragrant, strong, spicy, delicious but more than anything it is relaxing. I am a different person after a cup of this chai, it does wonders to your mind and body. Masala Chai
Prep time: 5mins Cook time: 15-20mins Total time: 20-25mins Serves: 2
Ingredients:
Spices:
a slice of ginger
½ teaspoon whole peppers
½ teaspoon cloves
½ teaspoon anise seeds (optional)
6-8 cardamom pods
½ teaspoon cinnamon powder or few pieces of cinnamon sticks
Tea:
125ml water
125ml milk of choice
2 tablespoon black tea leaves
2 teaspoon sugar (optional)
Directions:
Peel ginger and crush all the spices together into a rough paste.
In a sauce pan over medium to low heat, pour 125ml water and 125ml milk of your choice.
Add the crushed spices and simmer for 6-8mins.
Next add the black tea leaves and sugar, simmer and let infuse for another 6-8mins.
Strain and enjoy!
Note:
If you don't have equipment to crush the spices, you can chop the ginger finely, use pepper powder, open the cardamon pods and add the rest of spices as it it is. Just boil a bit longer to infuse the flavors from the spices.
This recipe makes 2 cups of strong masala chai, if you want a milder chai add more water and milk.
If you don't have loose black tea, you can use black tea bags, use one teabag per cup.
Simmering time also depends on how strong you want your masala chai to be, longer your simmer more concentrated the chai gets.
